Your Graduate GPS!

So you’ve decided to take a road trip….you’ve invested in a car, insurance, gas and a number of sundry items to make your journey more enjoyable (CDs/chips/one of those coffee pots that works from the cigarette lighter!!). Before making the decision to take the trip you investigated the ‘best places’ to go, you test drove a number of cars and you spoke to a number of insurance advisors to get the best deal. So a lot of work has gone into the planning for this trip; you’ve invested time, effort and money.So the morning of the trip dawns. The car is sat shining on the driveway, the insurance details are in the glove compartment and your thermal coffee cup is full to the brim. You’ve dressed appropriately and you know where you’re heading. 
The trip starts well…you pull of the driveway and continue through streets with which you are familiar but before long you realize you are on roads that you don’t recognize and you’re not even sure if you’re headed in the right direction any more. All too late you realize you have forgotten something critical to the success of your trip; a map or even better a GPS! The GPS would have been programmed with your intended destination, would have known where you started and could have provided clear guidance as to the routes that were open to you. Ultimately, the choice of route would have been up to you but your knowledgeable GPS would have been able to suggest alternate routes or provide confirmation that the route you’d chosen was indeed taking you in the right direction.
But why is this relevant to you as you begin your career? The trip that YOU choose to take was to purse a senior management career in business and the BIG investment in the car is your MBA (maybe you chose the Rolls Royce model or even the Datsun but whichever it was still a major investment). You researched your choice of MBA and Grad School extensively and maybe attended some open days. You spoke to admissions advisors, other students, alumni before you made your choice.  You invested in all the other materials that were required for the trip, you worked hard and you did EVERYTHING right. So why do you now find yourself somewhat adrift in your business career, unsure of which way to head and in particular how to drive the car the way it was designed to be driven?
